Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Barry Gardner Recognized as a Finalist for IBJ CFO of the Year

Congratulations to Barry Gardner, who was honored on Dec. 9, 2022, as a top three finalist for the Indianapolis Business Journal CFO of the Year in the Government/Schools category.

As assistant superintendent for finance and operations, Mr. Gardner oversees five departments for MSD of Wayne Township, including finance, facilities, grounds and custodial services, child nutrition and construction, and more than 300 employees that report to his departments.

The IBJ noted several of Mr. Gardner’s accomplishments, including:

  • A revamp of the District’s wellness program
  • Planning for the replacement of a 50-year-old transportation center
  • Increasing the District’s cash balance from $8 million to $54 million while continuing to increase teacher and classified staff pay
  • Addressing aging infrastructure in buildings
  • Spearheading the District’s energy management plan
  • Allowing the District’s 2015 referendum to expire, returning money to taxpayers

Mr. Gardner has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s in educational leadership from Marian University. He is currently working on a doctorate in educational leadership at Indiana University.
