M.S.D. of WAYNE TOWNSHIP NAMED 2023 INIP GRANT RECIPIENT

June 1, 2023

Mayor Joe Hogsett announced the M.S.D. of Wayne Township as one of twelve projects selected for funding through the 2023 Indianapolis Neighborhood Infrastructure Partnership (INIP), which is a matching grant program of the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW).

Nonprofit and community-based organizations can apply for a matching grant for infrastructure projects that include sidewalks, street resurfacing, multi-use paths, or bridges to help jumpstart development that may not otherwise be possible.

“Between community investment and matching City funds, these 12 projects represent nearly $4 million worth of much-needed upgrades for neighborhoods,” said Mayor Hogsett.

In the M.S.D. of Wayne Township, Stout Field Elementary students and members of the Mars Hill community can look forward to a new sidewalk on the south side of West Bradbury Avenue, which will connect Mars Hill Street and Holt Road.

Stout Field Elementary Principal Tim Wickard is at the heart of this project, which started with a simple question: How might we make sure that our children can walk safely to the crosswalks that exist on Bradbury and have dry feet? Because our children have been walking through wet grass and ditches to stay off the road in order to get to and from school.

“As a recipient of the matching grant, M.S.D. of Wayne Township is responsible for half of the project cost, but we’re not bearing the cost alone,” said Dr. Jeff Butts, superintendent of M.S.D. of Wayne Township. Around forty thousand dollars have been donated from community organizations, including AECOM Hunt, Indy Gateway, Inc., DWD Company, Palmer Trucks Kenworth of Indianapolis, OmniSource, and the Southwest Association of Neighborhoods. “Because of these organizations, this sidewalk project is possible with the help of the grant.”
