Elementary

• Project F.L.U.E.N.T – This program is for parents and students in grades K-6.  FLUENT is an acronym that means – Family Literacy: Understanding English for Newcomers Together.  If you are interested in participating talk to your LAP teacher to get all the details.   This program will start in the Spring and will meet in the evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.The teachers in the program want to help you finish off the school year with a bang!  You will get an opportunity to practice strategies that will help you understand and remember the information you read. Each student will also receive a free book at the end of the class.  The best part about it is that you get to pick the book!  We hope you can join us at Project FLUENT this year!

• Take-home kits and Lending Library – Are you looking for ways to improve your reading and comprehension? Then take advantage of our take-home kit and lending library program. We have lots of books with activities that teach ways to become a better reader. A kit typically comes in a bag and contains a book, parent activity sheet and audio cassette. But your LAP teacher might have other materials she is willing to let you borrow if you promise to take good care of them. This is an excellent way for you to get practice becoming a fluent and thoughtful reader. For more information, contact your LAP teacher.

Secondary

• Tu Futuro/ Your Future – The Tu Futuro Project seeks to inspire and educate Latinos about higher education and to increase Latino enrollment to institutions of higher learning. • Champions – What is the Champions Program? It is an Indiana Core 40 Scholars Initiative that seeks to better prepare students for success in higher education and the workforce through more rigorous academics in high school. Who does the Champions program target? Middle school students in 7th & 8th grade that are preparing to enter high school. If you need to gain a better understanding of the importance of completing the state’s Core 40 or Academics Honors Diploma curriculum, join us for the Champion’s program.
• Lending Library – Looking for some help on how to improve your reading skills?  Then take advantage of the ELs lending library resources available in your classrooms.  Each school has a set of Lending Library materials for students to check-out and take home to practice their reading and compression skills.  These materials can be fiction or non-fiction books.  Several of the titles come with an audio cassette to offer the student support as they work on both their reading fluency and language acquisition.   You can play the cassette and follow along in the book.  Then you can reflect on what you’ve read and complete a short activity.  This is just one of the many ways you can practice at home.  For additional suggestions on what you can do at home to extend your learning, contact your ELs teacher or the LAP Office at 988-8653.

Homework Help Web links and Resources

• Ask Rose – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Homework Hotline provides FREE math and science homework help to Indiana students in grades 6-12. Students may call the Homework Hotline from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) toll-free at 1-877-ASK-ROSE. It’s a free service and a free call!

• Tutor.com – This free service from Tutor.com lets you chat one-on-one with live tutors for help in Math, Science, Social Studies, and English! For students in Grades 4 – 12.

• Pdictionary.com – An online picture dictionary
• Starfall.com – Reading instruction and reading games for students in Pre-K-1.
• Storyplace.org – a site with online stories and activities. Grades pre-K-Kindergarten.
• Online Story Time – This site is more for teachers but has many online stories. It is advertised as a pre-school site but the stories are suitable for K-1 students.
• Arthur – Sequencing activity where students hear a story and put pictures in order.
• Printable Games – For readers in Grades 1-2.
• Storyline Online – A terrific site with stories read by actors from the ScreenActors’ Guild. Grades 1-4.
• Tumblebook Library – Click on “stories.” A large collection of stories from the Los Angeles Public Library. All grades.
• Clifford – Activities pre-K-2.Try the reading and writing section with students in grades 2-3.
• Videos – Short Clifford videos. Click on “See and Hear.” Grades K-2.
• Berenstain Bears Games and Songs – Great activities for young children including word games, songs and puzzles. Grades K-2.
• Enchanted Learning – Printable books and for students in grades K-4.
• MadLibs – for Advanced Beginners in Grades 3-5.
• Grammar Gorillas – for Advanced Beginners in Grades 3-5.

• Bookhive.com – This site has multicultural children’s stories told by famous storytellers. Be sure to click on “Listen to a story.” For Grades 2-5.
• Songs for Kids – Grammar songs for students in Grades 2-5.
• Postcards from Buster – See Buster’s adventures from various places in the U.S. Each city has video, audio, map skills and games. Grades 3-5.
• Arthur – Games from Arthur. Grades 2-5.
• Captain Underpants – Make a comic. Grades 2-4.
• Scholastic – A program for kids to make flashcards. Grades 3-8.
• Surfing the Net with Kids – Site with games and puzzles in different subject areas.
• FunBrain Reading – Intermediate students in grades 5-8.
• Zoom – Games, activities and science experiments from the TV Show Zoom. Grades 4-6.
• Ben’s Guide to US Government for Kids” – US Government information from Ben’s Guide. Grades 3-5.
• Listening Activities – Designed for older students but pronunciation and listening activities could be used for students grades 4 and up.
• BrainPop – This site has some free sections to teach grammar. Look up “nouns” and watch the video. Grades 5-8.
• Translation Site – Students can bookmark this site to translate words from English to their native language. Grades 3-12.
• Homophone game – Match homophones in this concentration game. Grades 4-8.
• Vocabulary.co.il – A vocabulary oriented site that is educational, fun, simple to use and user friendly. The site has vocabulary activities for K-12 in various formats – wordsearch, hangman, quizzes, crosswords, match game and jumbled words.
• Activites for ESL Students – Quizzes, tests, exercises and puzzles to help you learn English ELs. This project of The Internet TESL Journal (iteslj.org) has thousands of contributions by many teachers.
• Dave’s ESL Cafe – An interactive site for ESL students which includes, grammar, pronunciation exercises, quizzes and other helpful resources for students and teachers.
• Many Things – Interesting things for ESL students — A fun study site for an ELs student. Word games, puzzles, quizzes, exercises, slang, proverbs and much more.
• About.com – Resources for teachers and a wide range of topics.
• ESL Activities – ESL Activities.com is a collection of lesson plans, games, puzzles, and other resources for an ELs student and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers. ELs Activities.com also has several systems set up that allow teachers to customize activities with their own content, making the activities much more versatile and also allow other teachers to have access to the activities they create.
• ESL Desk – A site for ESL students who want to learn English online.  Contains other web links and resources.
• PBS Kids – All of the site’s activities seek to build awareness and appreciation of the many cultures of North America, and to support elementary school-age English Language Learners.
• The English Vocabulary – This website provides words grouped by topics, with their pronunciation and translation to various languages. Also, you will be able to print exercises which will help you to memorize every topic.
• Pics 4 Learning – This site is a “copyright-friendly image library for teachers and students. The Pics4Learning collection consists of thousands of images that have been donated by students, teachers, and amateur photographers.” So you can use them in student projects, web pages, conference presentations, or at parent night with no copyright concerns.
• Accredited Online – “Rules For Spelling.” A site filled with games, rules, and resources to improve a student’s spelling.

• Children’s Museum – Visit The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, a fun place where children of all ages to learn to learn.
• IMCPL.org – The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library provides materials, programs and services in support of the lifelong learning, recreational and economic interests of all Marion County citizens.

• Conner Prairie – Conner Prairie is the nation’s finest outdoor living history museum, based in Fishers, Indiana.
• Indianapolis Zoo – Visit the Indianapolis Zoo located in White River State Park downtown. A facility dedicated to providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for you, and a better future for all living things
• Clowes Hall – Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University, a professional performing arts facility, has been dedicated to lifelong learning in and through the arts.

Indiana Colleges and Universities

Why go to college? How about…a good job!  Sure you could probably find a job now, but the statistics are against you. Consider these average 2001 earnings:

• High School dropout – $22,100 a year
• High School graduate – $30,056 a year
• College graduate – $54,704 a year (Bachelor’s degree)

Ultimately, if you stay in school and go to college you’ll have a wider variety of jobs to choose from, and you’ll earn more – especially in the long run.
