Garden City Elementary Student Featured on Largest Mural in the United States

Garden City Elementary student Orondtondi Greyhat is featured on the largest mural in the U.S. The Glass City River Wall, which is painted on a canvas of 28 grain silos at the ADM grain facility on the east bank of the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio, is a stunning visual welcoming an average of 82,365 vehicles daily. At 170,000 square feet, the mural featuring Orondtondi, a fourth-grader at Garden City Elementary, is larger than life.

The mural, which was concepted and designed by artist Gabe Gault, depicts portraits of three living models – a Native American elder, mother, and child representing past, present, and future –  and honors the indigenous people of the area who laid the foundation for economic development as the first farmers in the region. Orondtondi is the “child” portrait representing the future and the important contributions Native Americans will continue to make in our nation.

Orondtondi and his mother, Shannon Turner, a teacher at Garden City Elementary, were featured in a recent episode of Briefings with Butts in honor of National Native American Heritage Month in November. Listen to the interview here.
