Westlake Elementary Celebrates International Day of Peace

A former student at Westlake Elementary has donated a peace pole to the school to commemorate the United Nations’ International Day of Peace. The pole was dedicated during a ceremony at the school on September 21.

The peace pole reads, “May Peace Prevail on Earth.” The message is written in eight different languages.

Scotty Bruer, who attended Westlake as a child, donated the peace pole to the school on behalf of his organization, Peace Now. During the ceremony, he read a 2019 proclamation from the City of Indianapolis designating the city as an International City of Peace. Mr. Bruer also presented a certificate from The Peace Pole Project stating the 10 trees are being planted on the African continent in honor of Westlake Elementary.

Robert Irvine, principal of Westlake, thanked Mr. Bruer for the donation of the peace pole. He also thanked Dr. Dennisha Murff, former Westlake principal, for establishing the relationship with Mr. Bruer that led to the donation. Dr. Murff is now a district administrator for the MSD of Wayne Township. Mr. Irvine also expressed gratitude to the MSD Wayne District Equity Team, which put the dedication ceremony together.

Westlake students read the message on the peace pole in its various languages, and sang a song of peace to close the ceremony.
