Graduation Opens Doors for Hundreds in Wayne Township

Nearly 1,500 Wayne Township students earned diplomas, certifications or U.S. citizenship in 2021, and their accomplishments were celebrated in graduation ceremonies on June 5 and 7.

Our Adult Education Program provides the opportunity for students to earn their High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma, industry certification, and/or U.S. citizenship. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett took part in the Adult Education graduation ceremony June 5, and 469 students earned either diplomas, certifications, or U.S. citizenship through the program.

Our early-college high school, Ben Davis University High School (BDU), held its graduation ceremony June 5 as well. Of the 129 students who graduated, 124 received not only their high school diploma but an associate’s degree from Vincennes University as well. For the eleventh year in a row, BDU boasts a 100-percent graduation rate.

Graduates of our online high school, Achieve Virtual, walked across the stage on June 5 as well. Forty students received their high school diplomas this spring from Achieve Virtual. Because of the school’s flexible scheduling, approximately 40 additional students are expected to be able to earn their diplomas this summer.

Ben Davis High School held two graduation ceremonies on June 7 to allow appropriate social distancing for students and their family members. Students whose last names begin with A-K graduated at noon, and students whose last names begin with L-Z graduated at 7 p.m. The ceremonies were held at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum, and a total of 861 seniors received their diplomas.

“With today’s accomplishment, you have the opportunity to make the rest of your life whatever you dream it can be,” MSD Wayne Superintendent Jeff Butts said at the district’s Adult Education graduation ceremony. “Whether it is to further your education, get a better job, or simply have the sense of accomplishment that you have completed this chapter in your life, be proud.”
