MSD Wayne Administrators Create Legacy Scholarship

MSD Wayne Assistant Superintendents John Taylor and Cheri O’Day-Marcotte are helping establish a scholarship fund that will recognize student scholarship, citizenship, and community service.

“The Taylor-Marcotte Legacy Scholarship Endowed Fund is being created to continue the tradition of excellence that Cheri and John have brought to Wayne Township,” said Wayne Township Education Foundation Executive Director Lisa Baize. Both Mr. Taylor and Mrs. O’Day Marcotte plan to retire at the end of June.

To endow this scholarship fund, in order for it to help students with higher education costs for generations to come, $10,000 must be raised.

Mrs. O’Day Marcotte has served the MSD of Wayne Township for 24 years. She was assistant principal and principal of Garden City Elementary, and opened Bridgeport Elementary in 2004. Moving to the district’s education center, she served as director of communications, director of elementary education, and assistant superintendent for elementary schools. Mrs. O’Day Marcotte also created the Wayne Women’s Leadership Group to support aspiring leaders, mentoring more than 100 women in the last ten years.

Mr. Taylor opened the Ben Davis Ninth Grade Center and, along with many others, helped increase the district graduation rate from 65 percent to consistently over 90 percent. He supported Ben Davis University High School in achieving ten consecutive years with a 100-percent high school graduation rate. In the last three years, 90 percent of those BDU graduates also earned their associate’s degrees. Mr. Taylor has actively supported the fine arts, athletics, extracurricular activities and numerous other programs such as Wayne Walks and College Signing Day.

“The Taylor-Marcotte Legacy Scholarship Fund is a meaningful tribute to these inspirational educators, while also recognizing students for their scholarship, citizenship and community service,” said Mrs. Baize.
