McClelland Elementary Nationally Recognized for Success in 2020

The MSD of Wayne Township’s McClelland Elementary is one of 100 schools throughout the country to be named a National ESEA Distinguished School.

A project of the National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators, the National ESEA Distinguished Schools Program publicly recognizes qualifying federally funded schools for the outstanding academic achievements of their students. It highlights the efforts of schools across the country making significant improvements for their students.

National ESEA Distinguished Schools excel in at least one of three categories: exceptional student performance and academic growth for two consecutive years; closing the achievement gap between students for two or more consecutive years; and excellence in serving special populations of students, such as those who are homeless or English language learners.

“McClelland Elementary is honored to serve a community of diverse learners and takes pride in providing culturally responsive teaching and learning practices,” says Principal Jennifer Nichols. “We serve learners who are gifted and talented through our Horizons Program, and we also serve students with unique learning needs in our Thrive Program.”

In addition, McClelland has a robust English language learner program and Title I Program, and is also a pilot school for a special STEM program in grades five and six.

McClelland is also a pilot school for Social Emotional Learning and has been used as a model for other schools to visit.

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) provides additional resources for vulnerable students and federal grants to state educational agencies to improve the quality of public elementary and secondary education.

NAESPA implements the National ESEA Distinguished Schools Program to highlight selected schools that have successfully used their ESEA federal funds to improve the education for all students–including economically disadvantaged students. More information about all National ESEA Distinguished Schools is available on the ESEA Network website: www.ESEAnetwork.org.
